Epson partners with Indonesian designers at Jakarta Fashion Week 2023 to promote eco-conscious textile printing

Epson-x-Calla-x-Aleza-x-Nadjani

Singapore, 19 February 2024 – As part of a broader goal to raise awareness of environmentally conscious textile printing, Epson , a global technology leader for professional printing, collaborated with three renowned local designers, Calla the Label , Aleza and Nadjani , to print and produce their fashion show collections. The Epson printer type series used in the printing process for Calla the Label and Aleza is Epson Monna Lisa ML-16000 printers while Nadjani utilises the Epson F-Series printer series for producing her collection at Jakarta Fashion Week 2024, the largest annual fashion event in Indonesia.

The fashion industry is at a tipping point. With more than 70 percent of the industry’s greenhouse gas emissions generated from upstream fashion activities, manufacturers are currently aiming to decarbonise manufacturing and leverage on sustainability credentials.

To reduce harmful emissions, brands can adopt digital textile printing solutions along with sustainable ink choices. In response to the growing calls for sustainable practices and commitments, the textile industry is slowly gravitating towards sustainable solutions – but more needs to be done.

Pigment inks have emerged as an eco-conscious and effective option, with an overall lower environmental impact, partly due to their shorter production process overall, as well as reduced waste and water usage. This has helped pigment inks meet global standards of sustainable textile printing practices, earning them Eco Passport certification.

“At Epson, we hope to bring about a positive change in the fashion industry through our sustainable technologies. Our products are driven by a dual focus on meeting the diverse needs of commercial and industrial sectors while prioritising people and the environment. Our collaboration with brands such as Calla the Label, Aleza and Nadjani shows our stride towards promoting and encouraging businesses to adopt sustainable textile printing practices. We will continue to contribute to a more environmentally conscious future for more generations to come,” said Morikawa Tomohito, Regional Director for Commercial and Industry Products at Epson Southeast Asia and Managing Director at Epson Malaysia.

“Calla the Label believes in sustainable fashion and we are thrilled to be working with a technology leader like Epson who shares the same belief. The recent collaboration at Jakarta Fashion Week is a testament to our commitment and we look forward to creating more sustainable fashion lines in the future,” Yeri Afriyani, founder of Calla the Label.

“As a designer, it is very important to print fabrics with environmentally friendly processes into my product line. While we actively utilise trends and styles, sustainability is at the core of our brand, and Epson’s innovation and ethos has been a great addition to the Aleza brand journey,” said Dia Demona, Managing Director of Aleza.

In line with other designers, Nadya Amatullah Nizar, the founder of the Nadjani brand, at JFW in October 2023, revealed that this collaboration was an extraordinary opportunity for Nadjani to work with Epson again. “By using Epson printers in the textile production system, it can reduce waste production and energy. This is a significant contribution to reducing the carbon footprint and protecting the environment,” she said.

In Indonesia, approximately 5,000 large and medium-sized enterprises and 500,000 small and micro enterprises are active in the textile industry. The textile and textile products (TPT) industry in Indonesia saw investment grow by 89.41% during the first quarter of 2023 compared to the same period last year, reaching $4.63 billion. With this rapid growth, there are opportunities to drive greater sustainability within the industry. For instance, Baju Kertas in Bandung is already utilizing the Epson Monna Lisa. In the near future, there will be the installation of the Epson Monna Lisa ML-32000 with reactive ink at Labda Anugerah Tekstil in Bali. Additionally, Bright Printing in Jakarta will adopt the Epson Monna Lisa ML-8000 with a pigment printing solution, contributing to environmental sustainability. Epson takes pride in being at the forefront of textile digitalisation, where our printing technology makes significant contributions to industry transformation in Southeast Asia.
