Projecting Voices: Epson Partners with Digital Artists to Amplify the Younger Generation’s Feelings about Climate Change

Jan 15, 2024Corporate

With only one third of young Singaporeans feeling optimistic about averting a climate crisis, Epson’s ‘Projecting Voices’ partnership uses digital animation to give a voice to the sustainability concerns of the younger generation globally.

17 January 2024, SINGAPORE – In a unique partnership, Epson has collaborated with two young, talented digital artists to visually convey the rising climate change concerns of the younger generation to the world. Titled ‘Projecting Voices’, the project was first devised ahead of COP28 as part of Epson’s ongoing commitment to taking action towards climate change, aligning with its pledge to go carbon negative and eliminate the use of underground resources by 2050.

Epson’s Climate Reality Barometer, which launched in October 2023, found that 60% of Singaporeans think climate change is the biggest issue facing the world today. In particular, those aged 29 and under (dubbed the ‘COP Generation’, or those born since the first COP in 1995) are less likely to feel optimistic about averting a climate crisis than those aged 30 and over. In Singapore, 22% of people say they feel both “concerned” or “fearful” about climate change in the next 12 months while 30% are “hopeful” in spite of it.

For Projecting Voices, Epson invited the COP Generation to choose words that best express their feelings around climate change, with the results revealing a contrasting and startling mix of fear, hope and anxiety in similar measures. These sentiments were then taken by London-based digital artists Katy Wang and Gabriel Greenough and turned into an animated art.

“We’ve focused our animation on the beauty and interconnectedness of the natural world in order to remind audiences that climate action can stem not just from fear but also a genuine gratitude for nature,” Katy Wang explains. “The simple act of noticing your environment more, and being present with the sounds, colours, and changing seasons, all propel us to recognise that nature has everything we need and gives to us endlessly. Preserving this, and looking after our home, has never been more important or urgent. We have really enjoyed developing this concept and we’re excited to share the animation.”

Epson has long aspired to achieve sustainability and enrich communities in many ways. Alongside ‘Projecting Voices’ and Epson’s 2050 pledge, the company has just completed its transition to 100% renewable electricity at all major Epson sites worldwide.

“As a country that is exceptionally vulnerable to adverse effects of climate change, it is imperative for us to be ready for the fight against climate change. By looking inwards to understand how the younger generation feel, we can better support them in safeguarding their future,” said Derek Tan, Head of Sales and Marketing, Epson Singapore.

“Kudos to Katy and Gabriel for succinctly encapsulating this myriad of emotions the younger generation holds for the future. From the digital artwork, we can see that optimism endures despite the anxiety and fear that people are feeling. We urge all businesses and individuals alike to watch the animation and appreciate humanity’s complex relationship with nature that is illustrated within.”
